Several Autonomous Cars Keep Driving Into And Getting Stuck In This Dead-End Street

Waymo is a Google offshoot that makes usually impressive self-driving cars. Recently, it had been reported that the cars made by the company are getting stuck on the same dead-end street.

15th Avenue in San Francisco’s Richmond District is usually a quiet, residential, and dead-end street and for multiple weeks now, it’s become a usual spot for autonomous cars that reach the end, get stuck, and then need human help to turn around, CBS affiliate KPIX reports. It’s a bizarre glitch that, depicts how there is still a long time to go before autonomous vehicles are ready for widescale use.

It has even happened sometimes that the cars that seem to drive there at the same time. This is being attributed to an algorithmic glitch, but the reason is still unknown. Resident Jennifer King told KPIX that the cars have been coming there nonstop for weeks now.

“There are some days where it can be up to 50,” King said. “It’s literally every five minutes. And we’re all working from home, so this is what we hear.”

The company does not have a clue about the behavior of its autonomous cars.  The human drivers, who sit behind the steering wheel for safety purposes, didn’t have more knowledge either, though Futurism’s previous reporting shows that they’re not really allowed to discuss much.

“We have talked to the drivers, who don’t have much to say other than the car is programmed and they’re just doing their job,” King told KPIX
