Geely Just Built One of the Most Efficient Engines Ever

Chinese automaker Geely has introduced a new hybrid powertrain that sets a benchmark in internal combustion efficiency. Its i HEV system has achieved a thermal efficiency rating of 48.4 percent, a figure that measures how effectively fuel energy is converted into usable power, placing it among the highest recorded for mass produced engines.

The company has also secured a Guinness World Record for this achievement, while reporting fuel economy figures reaching up to 106 miles per gallon under combined conditions. The system also uses relatively small batteries, typically between 1 and 2 kilowatt hours, reducing weight, cost, and dependence on raw materials compared to larger battery electric vehicles.

Geely plans to deploy the new hybrid technology across several high volume models, including the Geely Preface, Geely Monjaro, Geely Emgrand, and Geely Boyue starting in 2026. The rollout will be supported by a flexible platform that accommodates multiple hybrid specific engines, including 1.5 liter and 2.0 liter variants, paired with an integrated electric drive unit.

Early performance figures indicate that the Preface i HEV delivers around 59 miles per gallon, while the Monjaro i HEV achieves approximately 50 miles per gallon. These figures highlight Geely’s focus on scalability, aiming to deliver consistent efficiency improvements across different vehicle segments rather than limiting the technology to premium or niche models.

The announcement comes as global automakers reassess their electrification strategies. While electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, demand has shown uneven patterns across regions, prompting some manufacturers to place renewed emphasis on hybrid systems. Companies such as Toyota have long prioritized hybrids, with models like the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Corolla Cross demonstrating strong market acceptance.

Industry analysts suggest that hybrids offer a practical balance between efficiency, cost, and usability, particularly in markets where charging infrastructure remains limited. Compared to plug in hybrids or fully electric vehicles, conventional hybrids avoid the complexity of larger batteries while still delivering significant fuel savings.

Geely’s latest system underscores how internal combustion technology continues to evolve when paired with electrification. By focusing on incremental efficiency gains and scalable deployment, the company is positioning hybrids as a central component of its future lineup.
