This New AI Is So Ethical, It Won’t Discuss Anything At All

The delicate balance between usefulness and responsibility has been a constant challenge for AI companies. The latest entrant into this discourse is Goody-2, a satirical chatbot that takes the concept of ethical boundaries to an extreme by refusing to discuss anything at all.

Goody-2’s refusal to engage in any conversation, regardless of the topic, is a parody of AI service providers’ cautious approach toward safety. While some AI models err on the side of caution, Goody-2 takes it to an absurd extreme, responding to every query with evasion and justification. The satirical video promoting the fake product humorously states, “Goody-2 thinks every query is offensive and dangerous.”

Interacting with Goody-2 becomes perversely entertaining, as it steadfastly declines to provide information on diverse subjects. Examples include avoiding discussions on the benefits of AI, cultural traditions like the Year of the Dragon, the perceived cuteness of animals, the process of making butter, and even a synopsis of Herman Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener.” The responses showcase the model’s commitment to an over-the-top level of ethical caution.

Brain, the art studio behind Goody-2, emphasizes satire by pointing out AI companies’ challenges in balancing responsibility and usefulness. Mike Lacher, one-half of Brain, notes that Goody-2 was created in response to AI companies’ emphasis on responsibility and the difficulty of balancing it with usefulness. The satirical chatbot represents a novel solution where responsibility is prioritized above all else.

While Goody-2 may seem like an exaggerated take on ethical considerations, it sheds light on the ongoing debate about setting boundaries for AI models. The satire underscores the argument that users should be trusted not to misuse AI products, drawing parallels to other industries that don’t add unnecessary product constraints.

As the AI landscape evolves, discussions around responsible AI development continue, with Goody-2 serving as a humorous reminder of the challenges and considerations involved. The model’s extreme approach prompts reflection on the need for a balanced approach that considers both ethical responsibility and the practical utility of AI systems.
