With the advancement in technology and modernization, the world is connected excessively. If there is one server in the south pole, it can be conveniently connected to another in the north pole. This is how fast and efficient the communication system is built now. It is not wrong when people refer to the entire earth as one giant global village where everything is accessible through the internet of things.
This strong edifice of connection has brought a myriad of benefits for us. However, this blessing has its dark side as well. The information available and extracted on the internet can be used against the subject quite conveniently, leading to distress and safety issues.
If these concerns are felt on a national level, there is a threat of a larger magnitude that must be catered to immediately. Keeping this in mind, recently, Russia disconnected the country’s internet system from the rest of the world to raise its internet security. This was done in June and July so the objective could be achieved.
There is a sovereign internet law in 2019 that allowed the country to detach from the world’s shared internet. This was done in retaliation to the United States’ national cybersecurity strategy. Several tests were run on the telecommunications systems to ensure the safety of national data on the internet. They are reported to be successful, held between June 15 and July 15.
The tests were executed to determine the strength of the country’s network, Runet against any cyberattacks or security threats and, blockades. The tests were excessive and intensive and were successfully done. It was suggested that such tests be done every year to maximize security and to be on the toes for any threat. However, the onset of the pandemic of coronavirus hindered the tests from being perpetuated in 2020 again.
Karen Kazaryan is the head of the Internet Research Institute and stated that the tests were successful but still, their authenticity and reliability cannot be guaranteed as it is too soon for that. It will be a while before Russia sets up a Domain Name System that will allow Russia to have internet even when the global network crashes.
