After creating a series of record-breaking glass bridges, China is finally focusing on fighting air pollution. The city of Nanjing in China will soon see two adjacent vertical forest buildings standing up to fight air pollution in the area.

The green towers are not the first in the world, but certainly the first of their kind in Asia. The city of Milan in Italy features the first vertical forest skyscraper designed by the famous architect Stefano Boeri. The project named Nanjing Green Towers is Boeri’s first project in Asia. The two adjacent towers will be covered by 1100 trees, 2500 plants and shrubs of 23 different species.

The 650 feet high towers will house a 247-room luxury Hyatt hotel with a rooftop swimming pool, offices from 8th to the 35th floor, a museum, and a green architecture school. The balconies surrounding the building will give the inhabitants a chance to get close to the greenery with every occupant enjoying their mini garden.

The project is set for completion in 2018. It will incorporate greenery covering an area of over 6000 square meters. The greenery on the building will produce 130 pounds of oxygen each day while absorbing 25 tons of carbon dioxide round the year.

China is in a pollution crisis, and a couple of forest building are not enough to solve those, so the country has much bigger plans to fight air pollution.

“We have been asked to design an entire city where you don’t only have one tall building, but you have 100 or 200 buildings of different sizes, all with trees and plants on the facades. By 2020 we could imagine having the first forest city in China,” says the architect Boeri.
