Turns Out The Tesla Cybertruck Comes In Black As Well

Tesla has just unleashed its highly anticipated Cybertruck, and the surprise addition to the lineup is that it comes in black. Elon Musk’s original declaration that the Cybertruck could be any color you want, “so long as it’s nothing,” has been challenged with the introduction of three different wraps for the unpainted stainless steel body of the Cybertruck.

Initially, Musk had stated that wraps would not be offered directly by Tesla, but the narrative began to shift as the release date neared. Recently, Tesla started providing its wraps for the Model 3 and Model Y, utilizing a pricier paint protection film (PPF) instead of the more common vinyl film. PPF is thicker, boasts a lengthier warranty, and offers superior protection for the underlying paint.

The turning point came when Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s chief designer, was spotted cruising in a matte black-wrapped Cybertruck in Santa Monica. This hinted at an upcoming product, and Tesla did not disappoint. The company updated its accessory site, revealing satin black and white wraps for the Cybertruck, both priced at a substantial $6,500. A “cheaper” option, a clear satin wrap, is also available for $5,000. These wraps, similar to those for the Model 3 and Model Y, use thicker self-healing PPF film.

Interestingly, Tesla refers to the black and white wraps as “color paint film,” even though they are monochrome. The clear wrap is labeled “satin clear paint film,” seemingly providing a satin finish to the already non-glossy Cybertruck body.

While details about these wraps are still limited, Tesla claims that PPF is a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional vinyl wraps, possibly due to its longer-lasting nature. However, the Cybertruck, with its stainless steel body, doesn’t technically have paint to protect. Yet, Tesla asserts that PPF is an apt choice for the Cybertruck.

For now, these wraps can only be installed at two Tesla service centers in Southern California. Job postings on Tesla’s site suggest that this service will likely expand to other locations soon, catering to the growing demand for personalized Cybertrucks.
