This New Vehicle Combines An Electric Auto Rickshaw With A Detachable Scooter

The Surge S32 is a groundbreaking modular vehicle that combines the functionality of both auto-rickshaws and scooters, offering users the flexibility to switch between the two modes conveniently. Manufactured by Surge Automobiles in India, it is the world’s first segment-adapting vehicle, requiring different licenses for driving in rickshaw or scooter mode.

At the core of the S32 lies the Advanced Modular Scaleable Electric Platform (AMSEP), which serves as the frame for the rickshaw. It features a detachable scooter with its own batteries and motor, allowing it to function independently or as part of the rickshaw. The vehicle-joining/separating process takes just three minutes, making it efficient for users.

The Smart Switching Multi Powertrain (SSMP) system ensures seamless integration between the scooter and rickshaw modes, with each having its own powertrain and battery packs but sharing common controls when connected. Surge plans to offer four rickshaw body configurations, each with specific compatibility with an AMSEP designed for that body.

The S32 promises a top speed of 45 km/h for the rickshaw configurations and up to 60 km/h for the scooter alone. While details on battery life, pricing, and availability are yet to be disclosed, Surge aims to offer various designs tailored for passenger transport or cargo hauling.

The concept of the S32 originated as the Quark 1 back in 2020 and has since evolved into a near-production-ready status. It is a result of collaboration between Surge and Hero MotoCorp, with Surge being a startup incubated within HeroHatch. Together, they have worked with regulatory authorities to create a new registration category, L2 -5, to accommodate the unique characteristics of the S32.

The platform utilizes removable batteries from Hero’s Vida e-scooter, with the scooter accommodating two packs and the rickshaw housing up to six packs. This translates to a battery capacity of 3.87 kWh for the scooter and up to 11.62 kWh for the rickshaw, ensuring sufficient range and power for both modes of operation.

Overall, the Surge S32 represents a significant innovation in urban transportation, offering versatility, efficiency, and eco-friendliness through its modular design and electric powertrain. As it nears its official launch, it has the potential to revolutionize last-mile connectivity and logistics in urban areas.
