One of the most filmed cities on Earth is New York and you would think that you have seen everything there is to see in there. But, the most detailed footage ever has been captured by the cinematographer Phil Holland in 12K image capture. This means that each frame is a 100-megapixel photo.
Filming this footage was no small feat. Three RED Weapon 8K VV Monstro cameras with Tokina 35mm T1.5 prime lenses were used by Holland. These cameras were mounted in a Shotover K1 Hammerhead gyro-stabilized gimbal. The cameras were carefully aligned and synchronized to act as a single control unit and the whole set up was rigged up onto a helicopter.
The three cameras shot the footage over the city and the real challenge to combine the three images for each frame into a single panoramic image began after that. The initial step involved aligning, warping, stitching, and blending the images.
The frame that resulted from this was then put into a rectilinear projection to remove any fisheye effect. The projection was then cut down into a 12K rectangle and hit with some mild perspective correction. All this hard work resulted in a footage that was mind-blowing.
