A Dutch submersible manufacturer has introduced a new high-speed personal submarine designed for private exploration and luxury use. The vessel, known as the Super Sub, is capable of reaching speeds of up to 10 knots, or about 11.5 miles per hour, positioning it among the fastest privately built submersibles currently available.
Developed by Netherlands-based U-Boat Worx, the three-person sub is designed to operate at depths of up to 300 meters, or 984 feet, with a focus on maneuverability and panoramic underwater viewing. The company has a long history of producing private submersibles for recreational and commercial applications, including tourism and research, according to U-Boat Worx.
The Super Sub accommodates one pilot and two passengers and is equipped with an acrylic pressure hull that provides near 360-degree visibility. This design allows occupants to observe marine environments with minimal obstruction, particularly within the upper layers of the ocean where most marine life is concentrated.
In terms of performance, the submersible’s speed represents a notable increase compared to typical personal submarines, which generally operate at between one and four knots. The Super Sub’s propulsion system, combining multiple electric thrusters and hydrodynamic shaping, enables faster travel while maintaining stability underwater.
The vessel also incorporates hydrofoil technology, allowing it to move through water in a manner more similar to an aircraft than a conventional submersible. This enables steeper ascent and descent angles, reportedly up to 45 degrees, as well as tighter turning capabilities. These features are intended to improve navigation in complex underwater environments such as reefs or underwater formations.
Power is supplied by a high-capacity battery system, supporting several hours of operation per dive. Safety systems include life support designed for extended durations, sonar-based terrain scanning, and automated depth limitation technology that prevents the craft from exceeding its maximum rated depth.
The Super Sub is positioned as a premium product within the growing market for personal submersibles, with a reported starting price in the multi-million dollar range. Its intended uses include private ownership, deployment from luxury yachts, and potential integration into high-end tourism experiences.
Testing and certification remain ongoing, with sea trials being conducted in Curaçao. The manufacturer has indicated that preparations for delivery to its first customer are nearing completion, pending final validation and regulatory approval.
As interest in underwater exploration expands beyond scientific institutions to private users, developments like the Super Sub highlight a shift toward higher-performance, experience-focused submersibles designed for non-commercial use.
