The era of facial recognition is here to change the world. The airport in Sydney Australia will now be the first one to use its application for traveling. It will use the facial technology where ‘your face will be your passport’. Qantas, an Australian airline with the largest fleet in the world, has partnered with Sydney Airport to conduct trials of its biometric technology and will be using it on select international flights.

This upgraded biometric technology will be using a network of cameras to monitor the passengers while they pass through various checkpoints in the airport’s terminal. An upcoming version of this technology will be using biometrics such as thumb impressions to allow the travelers to check in remotely using a mobile app. This check-in procedure is currently under a trial phase with selected Qantas passengers and will be using four “key steps” for passenger’s automated check-in.

This will include passport clearance, bag drop, lounge access and boarding. CEO Sydney Airport Geoff Culbert said, “Your face will be your passport and your boarding pass at every step of the process. In the future, there will be no more juggling passports and bags at check-in and digging through pockets or smartphones to show your boarding pass”. Australia’s department of immigration aims to provide convenient check-in process for the passengers. The use of biometric data such as fingerprints, iris scans, and facial structures will provide a secure system of check-in which will be very difficult for the hackers to hack and cause identity theft issues. Airport authorities will also use the biometric system for “lounge staff who can create a more personalized experience” when the passengers arrive at the airport terminal.
