Breakthrough AI Model Uses 93% Less Time To Present Perfect Battery Cells

LG Energy Solution, a leading South Korea-based company, has introduced an innovative AI solution that dramatically reduces the time required for designing battery cells.

The company recently announced that their newly developed AI solution slashes battery cell design time by nearly 93%, reducing the process from two weeks to just a single day. This breakthrough promises to improve work efficiency and reduce operating costs.

Battery cell design is a crucial initial stage in battery production. The generative AI solution developed by LG Energy Solution is capable of quickly meeting clients’ specific requirements for battery designs. \

According to the South Korea-based Maeil Business Newspaper, this AI can produce an optimal cell design in less than a day, based on customer-provided specifications such as capacity, energy density, and resistance.

Once the necessary information is fed into the AI recommendation model, it generates the optimal design within a day. However, this design must be verified by human specialists before it can be used in actual production. This new approach significantly shortens the traditionally lengthy design process, which previously required numerous back-and-forth interactions between design teams and performance evaluation agents, typically taking around two weeks.

LG Energy Solution’s generative AI has been trained on over 30 years of data related to cell design and battery production. The AI model has learned from more than 100,000 cell designs created by the company to meet various customer needs and specifications, making it well-equipped to handle fast-changing customer demands.

“The most significant advantage of this solution is its ability to maintain a consistent level of design quality and speed, irrespective of the designer’s experience,” said a company official. This ensures that high-quality designs are produced quickly, regardless of the expertise of individual designers.

With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and the increasing demand for batteries in various applications, this innovation is timely and impactful. According to The Korea Herald, the AI model is currently in the testing phase, with plans to integrate it into the in-house cell development system by October 2024.

The AI not only generates design plans but also conducts performance verification within a day, enhancing its appeal.

“We will provide overwhelming product competitiveness and differentiated customer value by introducing AI technology to cell design that determines battery performance,” Jinkyu Lee, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) of LG Energy Solution said.
