There are remarkable advancements in the renewable technologies in the recent years; panels are getting smaller, portable, and efficient than ever before. Now, solar cells can be created tape-thin having only a few micrometers thickness. One can paste them anywhere, from the top of a trailer to the side of a building or even on the roof of a car.
Sunflare claims that they have created this amazing technology that can entirely change the face of solar energy. According to the founder of this Los Angeles-based company, Len Gao, his team has invented solar cells that “can be secured to any surface with a special double-sided tape.”
He said that it took them over 16 years to develop this state of the art ideal solar cell. It comprises of copper, indium, gallium, and selenide, and can be stuck on any surface. The company claims that their solar cells are far superior to the conventional technologies as far as the portability, weight, and efficiency are concerned. They claim that their solar cells are capable of generating 10 percent more power and weigh 65 percent less than the other panels. To add a cherry on the cake, Sunflare’s CIGS solar cells are incredibly cheap, costing only $1.07 per watt!
Since these solar cells come in the form of a tape, their flexibility and the absence of glass substrate makes them suitable for highly versatile applications and inaccessible places. The company explained their vision on the website as,
“Sunflare panels can be seamlessly incorporated into existing structures or integrated into unique architectural designs, all while providing clean, renewable, affordable energy.”
Usually, solar companies are unable to create cheap solar panels due to the expensive materials and chemicals. But Sunflare has an edge on its competitors, thanks to their proprietary Capture4 solar technology. In this technique, solar cells are designed using less toxic chemicals such as cadmium or lead. They also use lesser water and have the capability to recycle used water, thus making it a highly efficient process.
The company is very hopeful about the future proposition of their product, and say that they are gearing up to commence manufacturing on a larger scale this summer. For now, the product is not available commercially, but you can send a message to the company for more information.
