Say hello to Nicholas Muchami, a 45 years old man who resides in rural Kenya. Why are we introducing you to a Kenyan man? This guy is being hailed as a hero by his community because he single-handedly dug a one-mile road that goes through a bushy area in six days while making use of only basic tools.
Kaganda is a small village about 80 kilometers north of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The residents of Kaganda have been filing requests with the local government officials for starting work on a small stretch of road that would reduce their daily commute to a shopping center nearby. The proposed road was earmarked, but the project kept on getting stalled. A shorter footpath that was being used by the people to make the trip was also fenced off resulting in them having to walk about four kilometers every day. That is when Nicholas Muchami decided to take action and dug the road for free.
Nicholas Muchami does odd jobs for making a living during the day and works as a guard during the night. He single-handedly dug a stretch of road, about two kilometers in length, by making use of farm tools. He worked six days straight from 07:00 to 17:00 and has been able to clear 1.5km of the area forming a dirt road that is wide enough for the cars to drive on. He only has half a kilometer left before the project is over, but his achievement has already made international news headlines.
Nicholas Muchami says, ‘I had made desperate appeals to the local leaders to have the road built but all in vain. It was then that I decided to build it using my farm tools for the sake of women and children and to save time.’ Nicholas Muchami has taken a break from working on the road so that he can return to his normal labor and support himself. However, he intends to clear the remaining section and then level the entire road soon. The new road is already being used by students and pupils of Kaganda Secondary School and Kaganda Primary School among other locals.
Josephine Wairimu, 68 years old, said, ‘We owe him a lot. In fact, I will be marshalling locals to give him at least food to eat as he works on the remaining part of the road. I am also happy that I will now resume going to the church, two years since I stopped due to the poor state of the road which is also on a hilly area. My body is weak.’
