After the problem of ever depleting battery, you’ll always see smartphone users complaining about their phone’s storage, or rather the lack of it! Today at Wonderful Engineering we take a look at some of the ways we can work towards freeing our space. And NO, we are not making any fancy promises to clear your storage space with a click of a button (like some apps out there). But there are tried and tested ways, and they should work if you follow our advice.

Be Wary Of Those Storage Sucking Apps

After deciding that you need to clear up some space, you need to analyze which apps are actually draining your memory. You can do this on the iPhone by the following way;

Settings > General > Storage and iCloud Usage > Manage Storage. On

For Android phones, simply head to Settings > Storage

and you should be able to see a breakdown of how your phone’s storage is being used by all the apps. Once that is clear, you can opt for some of the less needed or redundant apps to let go off.

Clear Caches

For android, simply go to your settings and clear the cache.

For iPhone, you have to:

  1. Tap Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage.
  2. Tap Manage Storage.
  3. Tap an item in Documents and Data.
  4. Slide unwanted items to the left and tap Delete.
  5. Tap Edit > Delete All to remove all the app’s data.

This will free up a lot of space in your phone, as it will delete all of the application data.

Caution: Make sure your data is backed up for some of the applications which store your data merely on the phone and not online. Otherwise, you might lose your data forever.
Also you may have to log into some of the online accounts again.

Let It Go!

Let go of your old messages that you keep safe in your pocket in a bid that somehow that time will come back. Of course there’s nothing wrong in saving your precious memories, but you have to decide between your sentimental memories and the phone memory!

Best bet, take a snapshot of all the important messages, like birthday, anniversary wishes etc. But once done, clear all the inbox off the bulk of messages like the verification of log-ins, spam messages etc.

Do the same with other applications and emails.

Float Your Data!

Using cloud data services is the call of the hour! It can be a little daunting for people with trust issues on such applications, but all in all, it is probably safer than other options if you have a storage problem. It can cost you a little more of data cost , and the cloud service charges but using services like Google Photos, iCloud, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Evernote etc. is the best way to go about this. Choose a service and a data price that fits your needs, there is really not much difference when it comes to choosing between the cloud services.

Using online streaming services rather than download everything before playing/viewing it will also save you a lot of memory. So if you have a wi-fi connection, just go to youtube and play that new funky beat rather than downloading it first on on your phone.

Obviously Delete Apps!
You knew this one all along, yet still you didn’t pay heed. It is a lot easier to keep downloading apps and then not using them than to go through your app list once in a while and delete the ones you never used.
This method – though seemingly simple – is so effective that Google is already testing a feature that will suggest the apps you should keep/delete based on how frequently you use them. It is also working on a method to allow you to instantly download a part of an app when you require it, and then delete it after you have used it – kind of like an online RAM!

Look through you app list, you surely don’t need Airline apps unless you’re on a trip. Sports World Cup or Championship apps become redundant after the event ends. Many other apps’ function can be served by using the web. Just get rid of them , okay!
Obviously, there will be a lot of differences on how you would prefer to keep your memory clean. But by using some of our suggested techniques we hope you will be able to free up some space.
