A study conducted on various large language models, including ChatGPT, revealed staggering energy consumption. For instance, ChatGPT running on 10,000 NVIDIA GPUs was found to consume a whopping 1,287 megawatt hours of electricity, equivalent to the annual energy usage of 121 homes in the United States.
Looking ahead, concerns arise regarding the offset of this technological marvel. In a commentary published in the journal Joule, Alex de Vries highlighted a potentially daunting future scenario: the energy demands to power AI tools might surpass the power requirements of small nations. The worst-case projection suggests that Google’s AI alone could consume as much electricity as a country like Ireland.
The advent of generative AI, notably ChatGPT, has triggered a surge in demand for AI chips. Leading chip supplier NVIDIA reported record-breaking revenue, emphasizing the industry’s growth. Companies like Google, Amazon, and potentially Microsoft are investing heavily in developing their AI chips, further fueling the AI energy footprint. Integration of generative AI into everyday applications, such as every Google search, could lead to a substantial increase in power demand. A ChatGPT-like chatbot integrated with Google search might necessitate millions of GPUs, resulting in significant electricity consumption.
Efforts to address this concern are underway. Researchers are exploring ways to reduce AI model power consumption, such as capping GPU power consumption. Repurposing older, unused GPUs from cryptocurrency mining for AI purposes is another potential avenue.
While improvements in hardware and software efficiency may help mitigate AI-related electricity consumption, a fully offset seems overly optimistic. As AI continues to advance, striking a balance between technological innovation and sustainable energy consumption remains an imperative goal.
