A breakthrough in clean energy has emerged from Chifeng, China, where Shanghai-based Envision Energy has commissioned what it calls the world’s largest and most advanced green hydrogen and ammonia production facility.
Located in the Chifeng Net Zero Industrial Park, hailed as the world’s largest zero-carbon industrial park, the facility is the first of its kind to deliver green ammonia at an industrial scale. With a full suite of wind, solar, and energy storage capabilities, the site is designed to integrate renewable power with high-efficiency hydrogen-ammonia production. Innovative features include dynamic air-separation units that convert surplus green electricity into stored liquid nitrogen, and electrolyzers that respond intelligently to fluctuations in renewable energy supply.
Lei Zhang, founder and CEO of Envision, emphasized the global importance of the project: “This is more than a technological milestone. Scalable, green alternatives are now real and operational. We can’t get to net zero without green hydrogen, and we can’t afford to wait. This is the blueprint for a clean energy future.”
The initial phase of the 2.5GW facility will produce 300,000 tons of green ammonia annually, with plans to scale up to 1.5 million tons per year by 2028. Export operations are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year. Envision states the facility’s modular design can be replicated worldwide, offering a strategic model for clean industrial hubs globally.
This fully AI-enabled system represents a significant evolution in energy technology. It achieves real-time optimization of operations, balancing the supply and demand of renewable energy to ensure stable, cost-effective production. According to Envision, this integration of smart systems, artificial intelligence, and renewable infrastructure offers a glimpse into how future global energy systems could function.
The facility has already made a mark on the global stage. Envision Energy was honored with the Energy Transition Changemaker Award at COP28 and named an “Energy Innovator” on Fortune’s 2024 Change the World list. Further validating the commercial potential of its product, Envision recently signed a historic green ammonia offtake agreement with Japan’s Marubeni Corporation.
