World’s ‘Largest’ Green Hydrogen Plant Construction Reaches 80% Completion

The ambitious NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia is rapidly advancing, having achieved 80% construction completion across all its key sites, according to Air Products, the US-based industrial gases company involved in the development.

The project’s 80% completion encompasses several critical components, including the green hydrogen production facility, a vast wind garden, a solar farm, and the associated transmission grid infrastructure. Key equipment like wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolyzers, cold boxes, and pipe racks has already been delivered and installed on-site.

Air Products announced that the 4 GW combined solar and wind power generation facilities are expected to be fully operational by mid-2026. The project’s first output of green ammonia is anticipated in 2027, marking a new era in sustainable energy.

This massive endeavor is led by the NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), a joint venture equally shared by ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM. The plant is set to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen, delivered in the form of green ammonia—a promising and cost-effective energy carrier for the transportation and industrial sectors worldwide.

What sets this project apart is its scale and innovative integration of proven technologies. Notably, it leverages ammonia as a means to transport hydrogen globally, providing a practical solution for the challenges of hydrogen distribution. The project targets a staggering reduction of about five million metric tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, contributing substantially to global decarbonization efforts.

Situated over 300 square kilometers in Oxagon, within Saudi Arabia’s NEOM region, the facility aligns closely with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative. It will operate exclusively on renewable energy generated by dedicated on-site solar and wind plants totaling approximately 4 GW of power.
