Can You Solve The Jetpack Splashdown Riddle?

Who doesn’t love a mind-boggling riddle? I don’t know about you, but we do! It involves analytical skills, critical thinking, mathematics and a wide array of logic skills. We said we love riddles, and here’s one for you all. So grab a pencil and start working on it, but hey, no cheating.

Alright, so it’s the future, and we are dwelling in a tech-savvy world. Everyone has their jetpacks and has an opportunity to fly them. But right before that happens, every rider has a safety guide for what to do in an emergency—like when the fuel gauge on the jetpack approaches zero.

The riddle is, “the pilot hovers 100 feet above a pool of water, draining the jetpack’s fuel until there’s only enough left for one final moment of upwards thrust. Then, as the pilot begins to fall, he is left with one very important question. At what point during the pilot’s fall should he activate that last bit of fuel to best minimize his upcoming splashdown velocity?”

While you brainstorm over this riddle, you may find many answers, but let’s not forget that the mechanics of a sustained jetpack thrust also get complicated quickly. So we can make it a tad bit easier for you, “treat it like a double jump in a video game and say that the jetpack translates to an immediate change in the vertical thrust that lasts for the blink of an eye.”
