Bodyguard Safety Blanket Protects School Kids From Bullets And Tornadoes

A company based in Oklahoma has come up with a new gadget, which is a protective blanket and according to the company is capable of providing protection from tornado caused debris or bullets from a 9mm handgun. The product has been designed for kids in order to protect our future generations from harm. The gadget comes by ProTecht and has been named; The Bodyguard Blanket. The Bodyguar Blanket

The Bodyguard Blanket is, essentially speaking, a pad with backpack-like straps so that it can be worn and is bulletproof. Students will be required to put on this 5/16” thick gadget and then duck for cover. The blanket’s idea hit Steve Walker when a disastrous tornado hit Moore last year and claimed 24 lives, which included 7 children as well from an elementary school – the school didn’t have a tornado shelter. Walker says; ‘We’re trying to stop that blunt-force trauma when that rubble is falling down on a child, for instance.’

Steve Walker is a pediatrist from Edmond and collaborated with Stan Schone who is an inventor and one of his patients as well. Steve already had a sketch for the protective blanket that he showed to Stan Schone. The rest of the executive team includes two other personals; Jeff Quinn and Jay Hanan – Jay is an Associate Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. So whats the trick? Jay Hanan introduced Dyneema to the mix – Dyneema is a high density plastic which is lighter than Kevlar and is used for ballistic armour. It also protects from nails, shards of metal and any other sharp objects as well.

Schone said; ‘Instead of bending over and hoping for the best, they are afforded an extra layer of protection.’ The blanket is priced at $1,000 and purchasing one blanket per student would still cost less as compared to building a tornado shelter, however, Walker was quite clear about the importance of a tornado shelter when he said; ‘By no means would we ever say that this is more protective. But when you have budget constraints, this might be a viable alternative.’
