Xiaomi Is Launching Its First Ever EV – And Everyone Else Should Be Worried

China's Smartphone Giant Xiaomi Shifts Gears With First EV Launch

Xiaomi, renowned for its smartphone innovation, has recently ventured into the electric vehicle market with the debut of the SU7 sedan in China.

Xiaomi’s SU7 comes in two variations, one equipped with Lidar and the other without, offering customers a choice between Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) configurations. The RWD variant features a sole electric motor on the rear axle, generating 295 bhp, while the AWD version boasts a higher power output of 663 bhp. The AWD configuration includes a 295 bhp electric motor on the front axle and a 368 bhp electric motor on the rear axle.

The sedan is set to be available in three different variants upon release: SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max. The choice between budget-friendly lower trims, equipped with LFP battery packs from BYD, and upscale variants with NMC battery packs from CATL provides customers with diverse options tailored to their preferences.

Despite the weight associated with electric car batteries, the Xiaomi SU7 embraces its heft with a curb weight of 1,980 kg for base models and 2,205 kg for the top-end trim. The lower variants can reach a top speed of 210 mph, while the higher-end models push the limits at 265 mph.

Production for the SU7 is on track to commence in December 2023, with deliveries scheduled to kick off in February 2024. BAIC’s Beijing factory spearheads the trial production, with test vehicles rolling off the assembly line. Xiaomi has also taken a significant step by applying for a sales license for the SU7, reinforcing its commitment to entering China’s competitive electric vehicle market. Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd (BAIC) will oversee the contract manufacturing of this groundbreaking EV, formerly known by the codename MS11.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Xiaomi’s foray into electric vehicles reflects a strategic move to diversify its offerings and capitalize on the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions. In the words of an adage, “Innovation knows no bounds,” and Xiaomi’s SU7 embodies this spirit as it ventures into the exciting realm of electric mobility.
