Xiaomi Annnounces It’s Own Folding Phone: The Mi Mix Fold

Folding smartphones are the smartphones of the future, or at least, the gimmick of 2021. The whole idea is have a phone and tablet at the same time, while showing off a little. While closed the phone would resemble a regular smartphone but it would open up to provide a bigger screen and more space to work with.

The Mi Mix Fold is Xiaomi’s attempt at making a foldable phone similar to the Galaxy Z Fold and the Huawei Mate X2. It won’t be long will we see other phone manufacturers do the same. We might see a OnePlus foldable phone or maybe one from Google this year as well.

The inner screen of the Mi Mix Fold is an 8.01 inch 4:3 OLED panel with 2480 x 1860 resolution, support for Dolby Vision HDR, and a display brightness of 600 nits and 900 nits at its peak. Xiaomi says that the display is able to be folded 200,000 times. I have never quite figured out how they estimate these numbers.

The outer screen is 6.52 inches with a 90Hz refresh rate. The company says the phone is capable of 3D panoramic sound, equipped with four Harman Kardon-tuned speakers. The processor is as you can imagine from a flagship. A Snapdragon 888 paired with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. The battery has a capacity of 5020mAh.

The Mix Fold is also the first phone to use the new liquid lens technology in its camera. The company says it allows their telephoto lens to have a focusing distance of just 3cm and an optical zoom of 3x or 30x with hybrid zoom. The cameras are a Samsung HMX 108-megapixel main sensor and a 13-megapixel ultrawide.

The Mi Mix Fold is available for pre-order and will start shipping in China on April 16th. Prices start at around $1,521 or 9,999 Yuan up to $1,978 or 12,999 Yuan. No news about an international release. Still, that won’t stop enthusiasts from getting their hands on it.
