This Is How Wind Turbines Work

How a wind turbine works

Humans have been using wind power for centuries, starting from the grain crushing windmills to the modern day wind turbines that are a primary source of our renewable electricity. So what is the governing principle behind these ingenious works of engineering?

In essence, a wind turbine is the opposite of a fan, and instead of using electricity to create wind like a fan, it uses the wind to make electricity.

Wind turbines mainly operate using wind energy that turns two or three propeller-like blades fixed around a rotor. The rotor is attached to the main shaft, which rotates and turns a generator to create electricity.  Wind turbines are mounted on high towers to capture the fastest and less turbulent wind currents, around 100 feet (30 meters) or more above the ground. The self-induction generator connected to the wind turbine then produces 60 cycle AC electricity that is distributed along.
