Watch How Road Workers In Germany Repair Manholes In Record Time

Reeking garbage and a home for rats, manholes pose a severe threat to pedestrians and motorcyclists.

Once the iron caps on manholes are stolen or smashed in by heavy vehicles, the manholes become garbage cans or overflowing pools for rains, eventually clogging the sewage system and becoming a breeding ground for rats and infectious mosquitoes.

Despite the risk and inconvenience they pose, uncovered manholes are not uncommon. If you’ve ever driven over an old manhole, you know how inconvenient it can be.

In a YouTube video, a manhole cover is being repaired by a road construction crew in Bad Rappenow, Germany. The lid sways as something passes above because it is millimeters off-center.

According to the Deutsches Institut für Normung standard 4271-1:2012-10, this is an irregular venting, and the manhole cover must be removed immediately. However, the process of workers quickly replacing the manholes is oddly satisfying.
