Elon Musk, the visionary CEO of Tesla, never shies away from theatrics, and during Thursday’s Cybertruck Delivery Event at the company’s Austin factory in Texas, he took a playful jab at the past. The event brought back memories of the infamous 2019 Cybertruck window smash incident, a moment that went viral for unexpected reasons.
In 2019, lead designer Franz von Holzhausen threw a metal ball at the Cybertruck’s “armor glass” during its launch, resulting in a cracked window rather than the expected demonstration of strength. Musk later clarified on Twitter that a prior sledgehammer impact had compromised the glass, leading to its failure during the ball throw.
During the recent event, Musk, known for his showmanship, recreated the stunt with von Holzhausen attempting the ball toss again. However, keen-eyed observers noted a significant change—the ball appeared to be rubber-based, more akin to a baseball than the metal ball used previously. This time, the window remained unscathed, leaving the audience to marvel at the Cybertruck’s apparent durability.
Never one to pass up the chance to brag about his inventions, Musk seized the opportunity to emphasize the Cybertruck’s durability. He highlighted its features, saying it was “better sports car than a sports car” and “better truck than a truck.” While towing a Porsche 911, Musk demonstrated the car’s remarkable acceleration, showing off how it can travel from zero to sixty miles per hour in just 2.6 seconds.
The theatrics didn’t stop there. Musk boasted about the Cybertruck’s bullet-resistant properties, demonstrating its resilience against Tommy gun and handgun shots. In a tongue-in-cheek remark, he mentioned scenarios from movies where characters hide behind car doors during gunfire, asserting that it would only work with a Cybertruck.
While the event included its fair share of theatrics, Tesla’s Cybertruck does boast remarkable features. Its acceleration, toughness, and bullet-resistant properties set it apart in the electric truck market, making it a standout option for those seeking a combination of performance and durability. As the Cybertruck inches closer to production, Musk’s unconventional approach continues to capture the attention of enthusiasts and skeptics alike.
