Video Shows The First-Ever Reported Cybertruck Accident

In a recent incident on SR 35 (Skyline Boulevard) near Palo Alto, a 2023 Tesla Cybertruck was involved in a two-vehicle accident, as reported by Reddit user boddhya. The California Highway Patrol confirmed the incident, which took place around 2:05 PM local time. The collision occurred when a 2009 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 17-year-old, struck the Cybertruck carrying three people.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the Corolla was traveling south when the driver inexplicably turned to the right, hitting a dirt embankment on the right shoulder. Subsequently, the Corolla re-entered the roadway, crossed into the northbound lane, and collided with the northbound-bound Cybertruck.

Despite concerns raised during Tesla’s Cybertruck delivery event regarding its design and potential impact safety, the involved parties in this accident reportedly did not suffer major injuries. The California Highway Patrol’s release mentioned a suspected minor injury to the Cybertruck driver, who declined medical transportation.

It was also noted that there was no indication that the Tesla was operating in autonomous mode at the time of the collision. The weather conditions were described as cloudy and wet, possibly contributing to the incident.

Images shared on Reddit revealed significant damage to the front end of the Toyota Corolla. Dashcam footage posted on YouTube showcased the aftermath, displaying the damaged driver’s side and front of the Corolla. While the front of the Cybertruck remains unseen in the available images, both sides and the rear exhibited less damage, even with the deployment of side-curtain airbags. The report did not confirm whether the Cybertruck involved was a customer-delivered model or part of a different category like the “Foundation Series.” The absence of specific markings made it challenging to determine the vehicle’s exact status.

This incident adds to the ongoing discussions surrounding the safety and impact resistance of Tesla’s Cybertruck, particularly in real-world scenarios involving collisions with conventional vehicles. Despite the visual damage to the Corolla, the relatively minor injury to the Cybertruck driver may contribute to the ongoing assessment of the vehicle’s safety features and structural integrity.
