CERN is better known for its outstanding scientific achievements and state of the art technology, but today the facility has been in the news because of an inexplicable prank on its grounds by a handful of unknown miscreants.
House of the famous Large Hadron Collider, CERN’s facility in Geneva, Switzerland’s security is now under some serious scrutiny because of this astonishing lapse. The officials told the media that the people involved in the staged ritual had access badges, which makes the situation even more puzzling.
In an official statement given by CERN spokesperson, they said “These scenes were filmed on our premises but without official permission or knowledge,” The spokesperson further added, “CERN does not condone this type of spoof, which can give rise to misunderstandings about the scientific nature of our work.”
In the footage below you can see an unidentifiable bystander filming the scene. Then some figures dressed in black, hooded robes appear and gather in front of a 2-metre-high statue of the Hindu deity Shiva. This statue has been on permanent display at CERN since 2004, so this confirmed that the prank was held on CERN’s premises.
The antics continue with a women lying down in front of the statue before she is stabbed (obviously fake), while the guy who was filming it starts flipping out and swearing all sorts of pleasantries.
CERN’s security department has launched a full-fledged investigation, but still cannot identify the people who were involved in this hooliganism.
Host to machinery carrying out some of the world’s most elaborate particle research, including an enormously powerful proton smasher trying to find previously undiscovered particles; the breach of security is a valid source of concern for everyone. CERN tried to assure that that IDs are checked by all researchers visiting the grounds 24/7, but also admitted that once they get access, they are less carefully monitored.
