Unitree’s Humanoid Robots Can Now Dance Like Humans With New Open-Source Data Set

Unitree Robotics (Unitree) has revolutionized humanoid robotics by releasing an open-source full-body dataset that enables lifelike movements for their H1, H1-2, and G1 robots. This new dataset even allows these robots to dance like humans, showcasing a natural range of motion.

The dataset was captured using LAFAN1 motion capture technology and is compatible with Unitree’s flagship robots. The accompanying video highlights these enhanced movements, demonstrating the robots’ potential for natural interaction. Unitree explained that their redirection algorithm integrates interactive mesh and inverse kinematics, optimizing motion while respecting joint and pose constraints. However, it does not account for dynamic constraints or actuator limitations.

By incorporating these lifelike motions, Unitree aims to inspire innovation among researchers and hobbyists. The dataset, available for free on Unitree’s dedicated page, encourages users to experiment with humanoid robotics for real-world applications. Unitree’s humanoid robots are already making waves. The H1 model set a Guinness World Record in March 2024 for its land speed, reaching 7.38 mph (3.3 m/s) and surpassing Boston Dynamics’ Atlas. This achievement stems from its advanced joint motors, hollow electrical routing, and impressive freedom of movement.

The G1 model, Unitree’s affordable commercial robot priced at $16,000, is designed for researchers and hobbyists. Smaller yet agile, it can run at two meters per second and folds for portability. Founded in 2017 in China, Unitree has become a global leader in robotics, holding over 150 patents. Their mission is to integrate robotics into daily life, making them as accessible as smartphones and drones.
