Two iPhone Battery Explosions In Two Days Cause Store Evacuation

We saw how Apple admitted to slowing down old phones to preserve battery. This was a cause of major outrage from the customers. In an attempt to diffuse the situation, Apple cut down the prices to replace an iPhone battery from $79 to $29. This has led to a number of people shifting to this option rather than buying a new phone.

However, this move has not been free from incidents. One such incidence includes iPhone battery explosions. There have been two explosions in two days. The first one happened in a store in Zurich where an employee received minor burns when a battery caught fire. The incident resulted in seven people requiring medical assistance, though none of them required to be hospitalized.

The second incidence that took place in Valencia, Spain led to the evacuation of the store. The battery exploded during repair and filled the floor of the building with smoke. Emergency response teams were called but they did not need to intervene as the employees were uninjured and managed to extinguish the battery with sand.

Apple issued an apology late last year for their move and in a statement released on the website, they said, “We’ve been hearing feedback from our customers about the way we handle performance for iPhones with older batteries and how we have communicated that process. We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize.”

Apple is yet to comment on the issue of batteries catching fires. Before this had a chance to settle down, there are multiple reports coming out of China, Japan, and Taiwan that talk about the issue of iPhone 8 Plus batteries swelling out of the case.

There has been another report by a teenager from Florida that reported her iPhone had started burning and caused severe damage to her skin. Tina Pierre even shared photos of her burned stomach with the media. “It was really painful. It was, like, extremely painful,” Pierre said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God.’” Pierre said she told Apple what happened but received no assistance from the technology giant beyond receiving a replacement device. “They just kept asking me, ‘Well, how’s the phone doing? You need to send the phone in.’ And I was like, ‘What’s going on with my stomach?’” she said. “They didn’t ask me about my burn. They weren’t concerned with it.”

These are some serious issues that Apple is dealing with and they have chosen to remain quiet about the whole situation. We will know more once we get an official statement from Apple.
