Toyota Factories In Japan Shut Down After Running Out Of Disk Space

One of the biggest automakers in the world, Toyota, recently had an unexpected production hiccup when its Japan-based automobile assembly plants ceased operations for the strange reason of running out of disk space. On August 29, 2023, the event started, forcing the closure of 12 out of 14 production facilities.

With a daily production loss of around 13,000 automobiles as a result of this unanticipated disruption, there are concerns about possible effects on international exports.

The root cause of this unprecedented shutdown was traced back to an IT systems maintenance event that took place on August 27th, 2023. Toyota had planned routine maintenance to optimize its database by organizing data and removing fragmented information. However, an unforeseen issue arose when the storage capacity was exhausted before the maintenance tasks could be completed. This triggered an error, leading to the system’s abrupt shutdown.

The consequences of this system failure were magnified due to Toyota’s server setup. Both the primary servers and backup machines operated on the same system, rendering a seamless switchover impossible and consequently halting factory operations.

The crisis was eventually resolved on August 29th when Toyota’s IT team deployed a larger capacity server to accommodate the partially transferred data from two days prior. This facilitated the restoration of the production ordering system, allowing the plants to resume operations.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the intricate nature of IT challenges and the potentially devastating consequences of overlooking even seemingly minor issues like disk space management during routine maintenance.
