Top Google Exec Says AI Will Rival Humans In Just 5 Years And Predicts We’ll ‘Colonize The Galaxy’ In 2030

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, believes that artificial intelligence could be as smart as humans—or even smarter—within the next five years. Hassabis recently stated that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could lead to a great age of human growth and might make it possible for humans to colonize the galaxy by 2030.

The chief of DeepMind believes that AGI will drive major changes: finding cures for diseases, increasing life expectancy, and discovering new sources of energy. He expects the $600 million AI research lab to reach its goals and develop the technology in five to ten years.

In spite of increasing concerns about job losses, Hassabis rejected the idea of doomsday scenarios. He believes that AGI will boost productivity and lead to the creation of new, more important jobs. “We’ll be able to use technology that makes us a bit like superheroes,” he explained.

At the same time, some AI experts are not as optimistic. Dario Amodei from Anthropic believes that 50% of entry-level jobs could be taken over by automation in the next five years, which might lead to unemployment rates reaching 20%. Aneesh Raman from LinkedIn pointed out that the lowest-paid jobs will be affected by AI first.

Yet, Hassabis believes that human empathy cannot be replaced by machines. “You wouldn’t want a robot nurse,” he said, underscoring AI’s limitations in emotional care.

Bill Gates and Marc Benioff, among others, agree with Hassabis about the significant impact AI can have. Gates believes that the future will have shorter workweeks, and Benioff expects a mix of human and digital workers. According to Chris Hyams, CEO, as AI handles more technical duties, having empathy, curiosity, and adaptability will be more important than ever.

As AI transforms both work and life, Hassabis believes that the future will be full of opportunities and could even lead to humans exploring space.
