TikTok Tells LA Staff Impacted By Wildfires To Use Personal/Sick Hours If They Can’t Work From Home

TikTok is under scrutiny for how it’s handling its employees’ needs during this crisis as devastating wildfires ravage the greater Los Angeles area. Nearly 180,000 people have been ordered to evacuate as the fires have torched over 45 square miles and destroyed more than 1,300 structures. TikTok’s LA-based staff are being told to work from home or use personal and sick leave if that’s not possible amidst this chaos.

Smoke from the Palisades Fire is visible from the company’s Culver City office, which remains closed because of power outages from high winds. But many employees live in areas where the fires are widespread and power and Wi-Fi outages make remote work difficult. TikTok’s policy means that those under evacuation orders or without the means to work remotely must use their limited Paid Sick and Safe Leave (PSSL) days or vacation time.

TikTok employees get 10 PSSL days a year, which must also include common illnesses and emergencies. The company also has a strict return-to-office policy, which means employees are expected to be on-site three days a week, limiting flexibility for staff even further.

TikTok’s approach, critics say, runs counter to the company’s stated commitment to employee well-being. Sources reviewed internal messages that suggest a tone-deaf’ business as usual’ attitude, with some managers asking employees without power for status updates. TikTok has provided resources such as mental health sessions and an Employee Assistance Program, but the need to use personal time during a natural disaster has drawn backlash.

TikTok responded to the controversy by saying it is committed to employee safety and flexibility. But screenshots of HR communications and employees’ struggles indicate a gap between corporate messaging and reality. Many are calling on companies like TikTok to be more compassionate during crises as the fires continue.
