Thousands Pre-Order World’s First Commercially Available Flying Car

San Mateo-based Alef Aeronautics recently made history by unveiling the world’s first commercially available flying car—the Alef Model A. On February 19, 2025, a prototype of the Model A successfully completed a test flight along a closed road in California. Alef CEO Jim Dukhovny described it as “the world’s first certified flight of a flying car,” emphasizing its vertical takeoff capability and potential for real-world use.

The Model A is fully electric, offering a 200-mile range on the road and a 110-mile flight range. Alef is also developing a hydrogen-powered version aimed at extending the vehicle’s capabilities. Far from being just a concept, the Model A features triple to octuple system redundancy, an advanced obstacle avoidance system, and a ballistic parachute—underscoring the company’s focus on safety.

With a starting price of $299,999, Alef’s claim that the Model A will be accessible to “most people” is debatable. Nonetheless, public interest is strong: over 3,200 orders have already been placed. The aircraft has received two patents and a Special Airworthiness Certificate from the FAA, affirming its progress toward regulatory compliance.

In 2024, Alef announced a strategic partnership with PUCARA Aero and MYC to begin full-scale production. The company also enjoys the backing of high-profile investor Tim Draper, who has supported Alef since 2015.

Meanwhile, global competitors are entering the race. China’s XPENG AEROHT is developing the Land Aircraft Carrier, a futuristic electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle with a modular design that integrates a deployable aircraft.

Following its successful flight and increasing industry support, the Alef Model A marks a pivotal moment in transportation history—one that some compare to the Wright brothers’ first flight. While widespread adoption remains to be seen, one thing is clear: commercial flying cars are no longer science fiction—they’re on the runway to reality.
