The Irvine Police Department (IPD) in Southern California is turning heads with the introduction of the nation’s first Tesla Cybertruck designated for police use.
In a video accompanied by Brad Fiedel’s iconic music from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the new Tesla Cybertruck is shown complete with flashing lights and intense background music. With a price tag of $153,175.03, including the installation of emergency equipment, the Cybertruck is a costly yet bold addition to the department’s fleet. However, it won’t be used for regular patrols anytime soon. Instead, it will play a key role in community engagement, particularly in anti-drug initiatives such as the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program.
“For over three decades, our D.A.R.E. officers have driven attention-grabbing and one-of-a-kind vehicles that never fail to turn heads and excite students,” the department stated on Facebook.
Sgt. Karie Davies of the IPD emphasized the vehicle’s cost-effectiveness compared to traditional police cars. A standard Ford Police Interceptor costs approximately $116,000 and typically lasts about three to four years. In contrast, the Cybertruck is expected to serve the department for a decade, with the added benefit of being electric, reducing fuel costs in the long run.
“The Cybertruck is a replacement for another D.A.R.E. vehicle that has reached its shelf life,” Sgt. Davies noted.
Despite the excitement, the Cybertruck’s rollout hasn’t been without its challenges. Tesla has faced multiple recalls for the vehicle, with software and equipment issues plaguing its initial deliveries since November.
Furthermore, the truck has been the subject of internet humor, thanks to quirky issues like not being suitable for washing in direct sunlight.
Nevertheless, the IPD remains optimistic about the vehicle’s potential. While it won’t be used for routine patrols, the Cybertruck can still respond to emergencies and assist the community when necessary. Its introduction is part of IPD’s longstanding tradition of using unique and innovative vehicles to engage with the public.
