Renowned for their pioneering Vertical Forest designs, Stefano Boeri Architetti is venturing into new territory with the development of a state-of-the-art technology museum in Xi’an, China. Departing from conventional museum architecture, this endeavor aims to mirror the natural contours of the local terrain, presenting a striking image of a mountain enveloped in foliage within the bustling cityscape.
Named the Culture CBD Modern Technology Experience Center, the museum’s design integrates with the surrounding rugged valleys and mountains. Its façade boasts a sleek concrete curvature adorned with extensive glazing, incorporating horizontal slats for shading. The rooftop will feature a stepped exterior with terraces, walkways, and abundant greenery, including various shrubs and perennial herbs, providing visitors with an immersive natural experience.
“On the roof, the project includes a hanging garden in continuity with the park and a system of terraces that allows visitors to climb up to the building and gain a new look at the surrounding urban panorama,” explained Stefano Boeri Architetti. “The green terraces accessible to citizens will be an integral part of the museum’s cultural program of events (the different areas will host screenings, activities, shows and performances) – as well as offering citizens a new public outdoor space, with unprecedented views of the park and the city. “
Upon reaching the summit, guests will encounter lush hanging gardens and a spacious viewing platform offering panoramic vistas of the city. The museum’s interior will comprise four primary exhibition spaces, a temporary exhibition area, and commercial zones, all interconnected by a central double-height atrium. The decor will prominently feature a vibrant blue hue, reflecting the significance of digital art and design.
Notably, the project aligns with China’s penchant for nature-inspired architecture, evident in structures like MAD’s Chaoyang Park Plaza and MVRDV’s Oasis Towers. While the completion date remains undisclosed, the initiative is spearheaded by Stefano Boeri Architetti’s China-based branch, highlighting the firm’s global presence and commitment to groundbreaking design. The museum aims to offer both cultural enrichment and a revitalizing outdoor space for citizens, further enhancing Xi’an’s architectural landscape.
