A German company looked to a basic notion that has been appearing increasingly recently, especially within the latest Polestar O2 prototype: conventional single assembly. Because the Novum 3D backpack, suspenders, and back cushioning are constructed entirely of polyester urethane (TPU), there are no mismatched elements to hamper regeneration operations. All non-TPU parts, such as the straps, are simply detachable and may be dismantled before reuse.

A mediocre object that remains on shop shelves or is quickly retired would jeopardize Vaude’s sustainability and environmental objectives, therefore the business has worked hard to build the Novum 3D a very comfy, useful backpack that is also biodegradable. To that purpose, it collaborated with Oechsler, a German polymer, and advanced manufacturing company, to 3D-print a TPU honeycomb layer in replacement of the conventional cushion back cover. The all-German partnership with Oechsler helps to the resource efficiency of the Novum 3D concept, which is created, researched, and manufactured in Vaude’s carbon-neutral headquarters, eliminating this need for long-distance transportation.

Vaude currently employs recycled materials in the manufacturing of backpacks and bags, and this is reflected in the recovery and recycling of the Novum 3D. The welders obviate necessity threading, which would normally be used to bind multiple facets and sections of materials collectively, preserving the conventional single construction’s stability. Welded joints are also preferred because they remove needle holes, improving permeability.
