And he is only living in a small town called tomioka, just seven miles from the power plant, just to look after the abandoned animals in the area.

He has been nicknamed macchan, as he looks after almost all of the animals ranging from dogs, cats, horses, ostriches etc.

He also fled the area when the earthquake and the consequential tsunami struck, but returned very soon to feed his dogs.

Soon enough he realised that there were so many other animals who needed his help, so he decided to stay.

Even though Matsumura is not ignorant of the dangers of the radiation, but he “refuses to worry about it.”

When asked why is he risking his own health, he replied,

“they also told me that I wouldn’t get sick for 30 or 40 years. I’ll most likely be dead by then anyway, so I couldn’t care less”

Matsumura was heartbroken at the sight of thousands of animals starving to death and being chained or locked in barns with no food or water.

So understandably, he freed many animals that were left stranded and chained.

A lot of them now rely on this 55-year-old angel for food.

And even though the government has tried to stop him from staying in the area, his resolve remains unshaken.

He went to help the animals in 2011, and hasn’t looked backed since.

He gathers the funding for all the food solely from people.
