This Hidden Feature In The New Toyota Prius Could Help Save You A Lot Of Money

Toyota introduced the latest addition to its Prius lineup, the 2023 Prius Prime, in November. This model sets a new standard with its integrated solar panel.

In their official announcement, Toyota highlighted that the Prius Prime follows the legacy of its environmentally friendly hybrid predecessors, starting from the Prius Plug-In introduced in 2009. Similar to its forerunners, this advanced Prius model offers two modes of operation: a fully electric mode and a hybrid mode prioritizing performance.

As with all hybrid vehicles, the Prius Prime enables drivers to save money due to its lower fuel consumption. However, the addition of a solar panel brings further advantages to Prius Prime owners. According to Toyota, the solar panel is utilized to power auxiliary systems like the car’s air conditioning, thereby alleviating the burden on the primary battery.

This improvement when combined with an enlarged lithium-ion battery, significantly extends the electric driving range by over 50%, as claimed by the company. While earlier models reported a range of 25 miles, the Prius Prime is expected to achieve a range close to 50 miles.

The solar panel itself boasts a discreet design that seamlessly integrates into the car’s sleek appearance. It appears as a black roof without any visible wires or electrodes. Toyota also mentions the availability of an alternate solar glass roof design.

Solar-powered vehicles from different manufacturers are entering the market. A report released very recently predicts that the industry will exceed a value of $535 million by 2030. It is clear that cars that are equipped with solar panels, generate their own power and require less gasoline or electricity. This makes them more economical for budget-conscious drivers.

Hence, an increase in accessibility and reduced prices of electric cars in this expensive economy, contribute to their acceptance by even more individuals interested in caring for the economy.

Conventional gasoline-powered vehicles release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide which contribute to global warming. By transitioning to electric cars, the amount of greenhouse gases decreases eventually leading to a healthier and cleaner planet.

“This plug-in hybrid model has continued to offer customers the flexibility of getting around town on zero-emission battery power or hybrid mode for fuel-efficient road tripping,” Toyota wrote in its press release. “And now, this plug-in offers a thrilling experience in its own right — by bringing even more performance and technology to an already incredible package.”
