For all the people out there who love to experiment with their hair, this one is for you! The Unseen is a UK-based firm which has come up with a hair dye that will allow you to flaunt an ever-changing hair color without having to re-dye them at all!
The unique dye is called Fire, which changes its color in reaction to the fluctuations in temperature. The catalog of hair colors to choose from, is nothing short of spectacular, ranging from black to white, black (cold) to red (hot), silver to blue, blue to white, and black to yellow, as Forbes reports.
The switching between the two colors is temporary, and according to the company, the dye does not cause any damage to a person’s scalp. The dye can be removed through a few washes and doesn’t result in any significant or lasting damage. The company has employed thermochromic ink, which is used in cans to change their colors with the temperature.
But after employing
“less toxic ingredients, which has required a significant amount of reformulation and testing.”
Wired notes,
“The data used to create the dye stems from the process of thermoregulation in the human skin and the colour change chemical reaction occurs in response to a certain stimuli – in this case, changes in the environment.”
The dye consists of a complex carbon-based molecule undergoing a reversible reaction as the temperature changes. Above a certain temperature,
“one of the molecule‘s forms is more stable than the other, and so a reaction takes place producing a molecule with a slightly different absorption of light, and thus a different colour,” said The Unseen.
Different dyes react to different temperatures, for example, the blue to white dye works at 15°C (59°F), showing the winter season, while the red to black dye activates at 31°C (88°F).
There is some secrecy about how the dye works, which could be related to the founder Lauren Bowker’s plans to commercialize the product. He also revealed that he needs to iron out some issues in the recipe as well.
“We are currently looking for a commercial client with the scale to license this technology from us bringing it to shelves as soon as possible,” Bowker mentioned.
The Unseen now looks to move from temporary dyes to more permanent ones, while developing a technology that can depict a person’s emotions to perform a color switch.
Although the product may be just a nifty hair dye for many people, yet, the aim of the product is also to develop the interest of young people towards the applications of science and technology.
