This Employee Got Paid 286 Times His Salary In A Month – And Then Vanished

Honestly is definitely the best policy, but this phrase doesn’t fit here. It has been reported that a company named Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos (Cial) mistakenly paid a monthly salary of about 165,398,851 Chilean pesos ($180,000) to one of its employees, that is about 286 times his salary per month. He was eligible to receive 500,000 pesos ($542) as his monthly salary, but this huge amount when deposited into his account made him selfish, and the end result was definitely not so good. The man disappeared with the received amount, putting the company in trouble.

As briefed by the Chilean newspaper “Diario Financiero”, on May 30th, an office assistant at Cial noticed a discrepancy in his monthly salary. He rushed to the deputy manager at the office to report the issue. The deputy manager, in turn, inspected the discrepancy and found that a salary of 165,398,851 pesos had been credited to the account of the person reporting. This was 286 times that of his monthly salary, and as a result, the manager asked the employee to return the excess amount of money through the bank, to which the employee agreed. He said he would go to the bank tomorrow and clear all the mismanagement in his bank account.

The financial department of Cial then checked with the bank the next day to see if the employee had consulted the bank regarding the salary, to which the bank responded negatively. The company then started contacting the employee who didn’t show up in the office after this incident and had not been picking up the calls. At last, he got connected with the office and said that he would go to the bank the next day to refund the excess amount. The reason he gave for not picking up the calls was quite strange, as he said he “overslept”.

Little did the company know that they would receive his resignation letter on June 2nd through a law firm. The company tried to contact him again several times but failed miserably as the alleged employee disappeared, leaving behind no signs of his return. The company is now making efforts to not only recover a huge amount of $180,000 by legal means but also to sue him for this crime.
