A new browser extension is gaining attention for its unconventional approach to limiting screen time. Called Cat Gatekeeper, the tool interrupts social media use by placing a large animated cat over the screen, preventing users from continuing until a break timer expires.

The extension was created by developer ZOKUZOKU and is designed as a behavioral nudge rather than a passive reminder. Instead of sending notifications, it actively blocks access by covering the browser window, making it impossible to scroll or interact with content during the enforced break period.

Users can customize how long they spend on supported platforms before the interruption kicks in. The default setup allows 60 minutes of use followed by a 5 minute forced break. Once the limit is reached, the cat appears on screen and remains there until the countdown ends, effectively locking the user out of the site.

The extension tracks activity only when a supported social media tab is actively in use. If the user switches to another tab or application, the timer pauses instead of continuing in the background. This design focuses on actual engagement time rather than total browser usage.

Currently, the tool supports major platforms including X, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, with indications that additional sites such as Reddit and Facebook may also be included. The developer states that the extension does not collect or transmit user data, and that its permissions are limited to displaying the overlay.

The concept addresses a common issue with digital habits, where users often spend more time on social media than intended. Traditional solutions like reminders or app limits can be easily ignored, while this approach forces a pause by removing immediate access altogether.

Early reactions suggest the method is effective, though some users have noted that the overlay blocks the entire interface, including settings, until the timer finishes. This behavior appears intentional, reinforcing the idea that the break cannot be bypassed once triggered.

The extension is available for free and has spread quickly through social media, where demonstrations of the feature have drawn significant attention.
