When Studio RAP was approached by a client, they were presented with a unique and sizeable request. The client was seeking a sustainable and attractive dwelling that could float on a canal in the historic town of Leiden, Netherlands.
Studio RAP accepted the challenge and set out to design a modern home that would blend with the historical surroundings, be suitable for all four seasons, and have a minimal environmental impact.
The resulting home, named “The Float,” is truly remarkable.
Constructed from modular designs, The Float boasts a sleek and modern appearance. Wood was used throughout the home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The outside of the home was clad in high-density dark cork, which is a sustainable and modern material that seamlessly blends with its surroundings while maintaining its unique personality.
Inside, low-density cork was used as a natural insulator, providing excellent temperature regulation, noise reduction, and water resistance. The layers of high-density outer cork and low-density interior cork were connected with a cork-based mortar layer.
Cork is a sustainable, plant-based material that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible, making it an excellent choice for home design.
The home is nestled among its neighbors and the surrounding historical town, blending effortlessly with the natural world. In addition to its natural construction, the homeowners opted for a rooftop green space and hanging plants throughout, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
This floating home proves that you don’t need to choose between form, function, and friendly economic impact.
