The World’s Longest Undersea And Land Power Cable Has Been Switched On In The U.K.

The inauguration of the £1.7bn Viking Link interconnector marks a monumental stride in sustainable energy. This colossal undersea and land power cable, stretching an impressive 475 miles from Denmark to the Bicker Fen substation in Lincolnshire, has officially been switched on, heralding a new era in the United Kingdom’s power infrastructure.

Operated by the National Grid, the Viking Link interconnector is a testament to groundbreaking engineering and cross-country collaboration, as Katie Jackson from the energy firm expressed, “a fantastic example of engineering and collaboration.” The primary objective of this state-of-the-art power link is to deliver cost-effective electricity to the UK, with the capacity to power up to 2.5 million homes.

In light of the global push towards renewable energy, Jackson emphasized the role of such interconnectors in meeting climate and energy security targets. She stated, “As we deploy more wind power to meet our climate and energy security targets, connections to neighboring countries will play a vital role in increasing supply security and reducing consumer prices.”

The Viking Link is not merely a conduit for electricity but a symbol of international cooperation. Jackson highlighted its significance, stating, “Stretching further across land and sea than any of our existing links, it connects the UK to clean, green Danish energy, improving the security of supply and bringing huge carbon and cost savings for UK consumers.”

This groundbreaking project commenced in 2019, utilizing a custom-built ship to lay the cable under the sea bed. Upon reaching Sutton-on-Seas, the cable extends an additional 42 miles to reach the Bicker Fen substation, seamlessly integrating with the national grid.

National Grid envisions a greener future facilitated by its interconnectors, projecting a significant reduction of around 100 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the next decade. By 2030, an impressive 90% of the energy imported through these cables is anticipated to be sourced from zero-carbon energy, exemplifying the UK’s commitment to a sustainable and environmentally conscious energy landscape.
