India’s fascination with two-wheelers continues to grow, and with an increasing push for sustainable mobility solutions, CNG-powered scooters are emerging as a promising alternative. After the debut of the world’s first CNG motorcycle, the Bajaj Freedom 125, last year, TVS Motors has taken the next step by unveiling the world’s first CNG scooter.
This new variant of the popular Jupiter model was presented at the Bharat Mobility Expo. The TVS Jupiter CNG takes an innovative approach by incorporating a bi-fuel setup, combining a 2-liter gasoline tank with a 1.4-kg CNG cylinder. This configuration delivers a combined range of 140 miles (226 km), with CNG alone providing a mileage of 52 miles (84 km) per kilogram. However, the addition of the CNG cylinder comes at the cost of the scooter’s iconic 33-liter under-seat storage space, as the tank is housed beneath the seat.

The refueling nozzle for the CNG tank is also located under the seat, which isn’t a significant inconvenience since riders typically dismount to refill anyway. The scooter retains its user-friendly design, with the gasoline filler cap conveniently placed in the front apron. Riders can easily switch between gasoline and CNG modes using a button located on the switch box, offering flexibility for different riding scenarios.
The Jupiter CNG is powered by a 124.8-cc air-cooled, single-cylinder bi-fuel engine that generates 7.2 horsepower and a maximum torque of 7 lb-ft (9.4 Nm). While these numbers are slightly lower than those of the petrol-only version, which produces 8.1 hp and 7.7 lb-ft (10.5 Nm) of torque, the scooter still offers a comfortable ride with a top speed of 50 mph (80.5 km/h). Its CVT automatic gearbox ensures smooth performance for urban commuting, prioritizing fuel efficiency over raw power.

TVS has packed the Jupiter CNG with features aimed at enhancing convenience and comfort. The scooter includes its proprietary Eco-Thrust Fuel Injection and IntelliGO start-stop technology, designed to optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions. It retains the largest seat in its class, ensuring comfort for riders, and comes equipped with a USB charging port, LED headlamp, semi-digital instrument cluster, side stand indicator, and an all-in-one lock system.
Although the CNG-powered engine emits 20% fewer greenhouse gases compared to petrol engines, this does not account for the emissions generated during the extraction, processing, and distribution of CNG, which remains a critical factor in assessing its overall environmental impact.
The petrol-powered Jupiter 125 is currently priced between INR 79,540 (US$918) and INR 90,721 (US$1,050), and the CNG variant is expected to carry a slightly higher price tag.

TVS has not announced a specific release date, but the Jupiter CNG is likely to hit the market by the end of 2025, with availability limited to India.
