It is a famous saying that dogs are a man’s best friend. In terms of military operations, this relation gets much stronger as soldiers on ground operations have trained dogs as a key asset.
There are numerous examples where these trained military dogs have proved to play a vital role during dangerous missions.
There are traditional ways of handling these dogs, which sometimes get a little hard. To address this, the U.S Army, in collaboration with Command Sight, has developed a new technology of goggles that will make handling these dogs on the ground a lot easier.
These new goggles will help protect the handlers as they could now address and direct their dogs from a safe distance. And the technology promises to make the human and dog’s connection more efficient.
The new gear for military dogs consists of augmented reality goggles that help a handler remotely command their dogs safely.
Dr. Stephen Lee, an ARO scientist, said that the augmented reality works differently for dogs than humans. The new technology goggles enable the handlers to see what the dog sees, increasing a win’s likeliness in a battle.
Dogs will get commands and cues using augmented reality in this novel tech. These goggles will enhance human and dog communication abilities at large.
Apart from making the connection better, these goggles also offer unmatched insight into how the dogs take the cues. This novel tech could provide a far superior alternative to conventional commands. Conventional methods for communicating and directing military dogs were hand gestures, audio input, and lasers.
Founder of Command Sight, Dr. A.J. Peper, said that we are still at the beginning stages of the research of applying this new goggles tech to dogs. And the results from initial research are way promising.
Much of the existing research is conducted on a Rottweiler, and his ability to generalize commands with this tech has proved incredible so far. However, there is still a way to go from the concept to its development based on further extensive research. The good news is it has proved fruitful so far!
