The Most EV-Friendly Country In The World Is Still Loyal To Tesla

Norway has demonstrated why it is considered the most EV-friendly place on the planet yet again. With over 90% of new cars in the country being electric, Tesla is experiencing a comeback, especially thanks to the Model Y.

Although Tesla sales are slowing in Europe, it remains a formidable force in Norway. In May, Tesla saw registrations in Norway rise to 2,600, thanks to the high demand for the Model Y. This performance not only placed Tesla as Norway’s top car brand for the month but also erased the company’s previous year-to-date sales losses.

Even though Model Y sales increased by 100% in May, Tesla’s issues in Europe are not fully explained by supply issues, as Norway’s results are very different from the rest of the continent. In the Netherlands, Tesla registrations fell by 36%; in Sweden, they dropped by more than half; and in France, there was a dramatic two-thirds decrease—all places where the brand used to do well.

The three markets combined sold only 2,281 Teslas in May, which is less than the number of Model Ys sold in Norway alone. In Spain, Tesla’s sales dropped by 29% because EVs are not being adopted quickly. China’s BYD is gaining speed, as its sales in Spain have increased tenfold due to the Seal U crossover, which offers both electric and plug-in hybrid models.

BYD is experiencing growth in other countries as well. The company’s Hungarian plant is about to start production, and because of this, its global EV sales rose by 42% in May. It is now expected to overtake Tesla in annual sales for the first time. While Tesla struggles across much of Europe, Norway’s unwavering support highlights the brand’s enduring appeal—at least in one part of the continent where electric dreams are still alive and thriving.
