Tesla has rehashed plans for a $25,000 compact electric vehicle (EV) alongside its Robotaxi initiative, intending to offer the affordable model as an evolution of its existing Gen-2 architecture. However, the decision not to utilize Tesla’s unboxed manufacturing process for this affordable vehicle implies it won’t be as inexpensive as initially projected, with production efficiency also likely to suffer due to reliance on existing production facilities.
Nonetheless, Tesla confirmed its intention to employ the unboxed process for a future Robotaxi vehicle based on the Gen-3 architecture. Elon Musk announced the unveiling of the Robotaxi during a special event on August 8, potentially in China, though it remains uncertain if the vehicle will adopt the unboxed process from the outset or integrate it later as it matures.
A new video addressed to shareholders by Tesla features revealing frames showcasing a mockup of the Robotaxi and a front design detail. Notably, the video introduces the new ride-hailing section in the Tesla app, which poses a challenge to Uber executives.
In one frame, Tesla’s chief designer stands before a picture displaying the Robotaxi’s seat bench, hinting at a two-seater vehicle devoid of a steering wheel, featuring basic seating akin to public transport. Another frame displays a wooden mockup representing the “NV93 Vehicle Package Side View,” confirming the Robotaxi’s two-seat configuration.
Additionally, a seemingly inconspicuous frame offers a glimpse of the future vehicle’s front bumper, resembling the Cybertruck’s design, reinforcing speculation that the Robotaxi will draw inspiration from it, earning the moniker “Cybercab.”
The video also elucidates how ordering the Robotaxi via Tesla’s ride-hailing app might function, promising integrated features such as climate control adjustment, music playback, and real-time tracking within the app interface.
