A measuring tape is one of the most basic and important tools we have at our disposal. However, they might soon be going obsolete. The Arrim One is the world’s first AR measuring device. It is actually an AR smartphone dongle that can size up straight lines, circles, and angles after connecting to your phone. It then shows these measurements in the AR view of the world.

Arrim One uses the camera of your phone for the AT and superimposes dimensions over what is visible on the screen. You can just point the camera and simply tap the screen to confirm the points you want to measure between. The app creates a 3D point map of the environment so you can see all those measurements displayed even if you move around.

The phase shift in the laser is used to determine the distance. The software in the phone is then used to measure things other than straight lines. The device is only 5 x 3 x 1.5 cm in size and has a weight of just 35 grams. It has 100-mAh Li-ion battery that can provide 1,000 measurements on a single charge.

There is just a simple on and off button the device. Other than that, the device is completely controlled by the phone. The Arrim One has an accuracy of plus-minus 1.5 mm and a range of 20 meters. The device can actually be used for as much as 40 meters but the accuracy apparently drops at such long distances and the bright sunlight can also affect performance over long distances.

The technology also makes it easier to measure circles by just specifying three points. Arrim One has the ability to visually divide areas and display horizontal lines. It can show the dimensions in different units and can share measurements with others. The makers pointed out that there could be more updates to the software to add even more features.

It is currently a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of $20,000. You can pledge $69 if you want to get your hands on one when shipping starts in September. You can check out the pitch video below:
