Oceans are being polluted with plastic waste. This pollution is killing marine life and ends up in our salt in the form of microplastics. According to reports, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea as compared to fish. It is during these times that the use of banana leaves for packaging as an alternative to plastic has been reported in a Thai supermarket.
The Thai supermarket is employing the use of bamboo string and banana leaves for packaging. This unique packaging is eco-friendly and has made news after its pictures were shared by a real estate company on Facebook. Such initiatives are what we need to make an impact, and the Thai supermarket gets it!
Perfect Homes Chiangmai’s team member, who took the picture, said, ‘We just popped in to get a few items while we were waiting to sign some contracts with our lawyer, who was delayed, so we were not even meant to be there at that time. When I noticed the veg wrapped in banana leaves and simply liked the idea and showed my wife, who picked a few up to buy. I thought I would take a few pictures and just post to the page, and that was it.’
The pictures have gone viral with many people sharing them on their social media and appreciating the effort that is being made by Thai supermarket. A lot of outlets at the Thai supermarket are making use of this ingenious and environmentally friendly packaging. The banana leaves can be thrown into the compost thus causing zero waste.
What do you think? Isn’t it time that other supermarkets took a page out of the Thai supermarket book? It is about time we started making a conscious effort to protect our planet, right? Share the news with your friends and do let us know what you think of this initiative!
