Tesla Rebounds In May As Model Y Records Best Month Of Sales In More Than A Year

Sales of Tesla’s electric cars in Australia improved a lot in May, thanks to the new Model Y. According to the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), Tesla delivered 3,897 vehicles in May, compared to just 500 in April, which was affected by shipping delays from China.

The Model Y was the top performer, selling 3,580 units, which was its best month since March 2024 and more than twice as many as it sold in May 2024. Australia was the last country to receive the updated Model Y, even though it was launched earlier in Europe and other regions. Sales of the Model 3 dropped to 317, which is a significant decrease from the 1,958 sold in the same period last year.

Tesla’s sales in May increased by 10% compared to the same period last year, but its total sales for 2025 are still down 48% at 9,557 units. The Model 3 has lost 70% of its value this year, but the Model Y has improved, falling only 27.4% with 6,974 units sold. If deliveries remain high, the Model Y could catch up with 2024’s results.

The company’s difficulties this year are due to retooling its factories for the Model Y, delays in shipping, and negative reactions from customers to Elon Musk’s political views and behavior. Yet, the May sales indicate the updated Model Y could help the company regain its momentum.

At the same time, Polestar saw an increase, selling 243 cars in May, which was 66% more than in the same month last year. The Polestar 4 was the top seller with 133 cars sold, followed by the Polestar 2 (82) and the Polestar 3 (28).

With the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) set to release broader EV sales data on Wednesday, Tesla’s strong May sales are expected to help EVs regain market share, which had fallen from over 10% to just above 5% earlier this year. In spite of recent difficulties, the Model Y is still the top-selling electric vehicle in Australia.
