Welcome to Garden Santa Fe, a 7-story deep underground mall located in Mexico City for shopping. It is an amazing cross of basic infrastructure with a re-envisioning of modern retail. Urban real estate is becoming an expensive commodity and that’s exactly why going underground makes far more sense.
Robert Velasco, lead architect at KMD Architects shared his views and said, “The basic concept is how can we translate what is overground to what is underground. The problem was how do we bring both the daylight and park into the retail environment? There was nothing quite like this at the time in Mexico, so as we researched the concept we only found a few examples worldwide.We wanted to make it feel as though you are in the city and not underground.”
It features outdoor spaces at various levels below ground. The circular courtyards along with live trees situated at the bottom and second level of the mall help to create an environment that is NOT claustrophobic. 
Now this is something you hardly see in modern malls; sunlight coming in from all sides. 
It supports three complete story glass atriums. 
The mall and parking garage development had to maintain the existing open space located in the dense commercial district while entertaining 1400 parking spaces. The huge underground parking structure is located 7 stories beneath the street. 
As the building is 7 stories deep, it results in a much more efficient cooling and heating system. The mall makes use of 60% of energy that would be consumed by a comparable mall. It also features a detailed rain collection system and has an onsite grey water restaurant. 
It is located on the southwest edge of Mexico City. 
Garden Santa Fe’s three subterranean atriums resemble glass whirlpools that connect sky to the underground.
